Instead of adding tips or extending the nail beyond its natural free edge, gel is applied directly over the natural nail. The product can be structured and refined to create a smooth, balanced surface and a polished finished shape.

What is a Gel Overlay?
A gel overlay is a layer of gel applied directly to the natural nail without adding artificial length.
Unlike an extension service, there is no tip or extension used to create additional length. The purpose is to work with the natural nail you already have while adding structure through the gel application.

Nail Extensions Creates additional length beyond your natural nail.
An overlay is generally appropriate when you already have usable natural length and want structure or refinement without creating significant additional length. An extension is the more appropriate direction when the desired result requires new length.
If you’re bringing a reference photo, you don’t need to figure this out on your own. The important question is whether the look you want can be achieved with your existing nail length.

Does Gel Overlay make my nails longer?
No. Gel Overlay is applied over your existing natural nail and does not inherently add extension length.

Is Gel Overlay the same as BIAB / Builder Gel?
There can be overlap in terminology.
A builder gel or BIAB product can be used to create an overlay, and “builder gel overlay” is a commonly used professional term. However, Ishi lists Gel Overlay and BIAB / Builder Gel as separate services, so the two should not automatically be treated as identical services.

Ishi’s listed appointment duration is 1–2 hours.

Is Gel Overlay suitable for everyone?

Will Gel Overlay strengthen my natural nails?
It is more accurate to say that the gel overlay adds structure to the natural nail while it is applied rather than promising that it permanently strengthens the nail itself.
